Character NPCLevel 2

Elf • Rogue

HP 12 • AC 12

Veyra Thist is the pale fey thief nested in the tower lantern; she actively steals the moonbeam, fights to defend her hiding place, and leaves the marked stone arch as a lead for future adventures.

Events

Event 1

Warden’s Warning

Read Aloud

The watchtower room smells of rain-soaked wood and lamp oil. Warden Elira Moss stands beside a dim lantern housing, while the rescued messenger clings close and points upward toward the dark stairs.

Details

Elira Moss is tense but controlled, and she wants the party to move at once before the tower’s light fails completely. She explains that something has climbed into the lantern room and stolen the living moonbeam. The messenger confirms the upper floors are safe to enter but not safe to ignore. The party can question Elira for the quickest route, inspect the stairwell for signs of recent passage, or head up immediately. A successful Spot check notices pale dust on the rail and a faint trail of glittering residue leading upward. The required next step is clear: go into the tower and follow the signs.

Event 2

Pale Footprints on the Stairs

Read Aloud

The lower stairs twist through narrow stone walls. Pale dust clings to the steps, ribbons snag on broken hooks, and tiny footprints mark the way upward through the gloom.

Details

Attached monsters (use these exact stat blocks): - Quantity: 2; Monster: Sprite. Why here: They are delaying intruders on the lower stairs and guarding Veyra Thist’s upward trail. Activity: Dart between bannisters, cut loose ribbons, and sting anyone who rushes past. Attitude: immediately hostile and evasive Encounter start: alert monster at a distance Response trigger: They attack if the party advances openly, or retreat if badly hurt or outmaneuvered. Aftermath: Their discarded ribbon marker and silver dust show the route continues to the rafters. Room guidance: Two Sprite are here because they were sent to delay intruders and keep Veyra Thist’s trail protected. They flit among the shadows near the stair turns, testing the heroes with quick taunts and darting movements. Their attitude is immediately hostile and evasive, but they may retreat if hurt or if the party offers a convincing bluff about leaving the tower. The encounter starts with the Sprite at a distance, so use a Spot check to see who notices whom first. On success, the party spots the pair before they can dart away and may act, hide, or withdraw; on failure, the Sprite notice first and begin harrying the stairs. Searching the stairwell after the scene reveals the trail continues to the upper rafters, and a successful Spot check also finds a torn ribbon tied around a nail as a marker from Veyra Thist.

Event 3

Wind-Bent Rafters

Read Aloud

Above the stairwell, the tower opens into a lattice of beams and swaying chains. Cold wind pushes through broken shutters, and the rafters groan under every step.

Details

Attached monsters (use these exact stat blocks): - Quantity: 1; Monster: Ape. Why here: It has been driven wild by the tower’s storm gusts and is clinging to the rafters above the stairwell. Activity: Clutch the beams, screech at movement, and block the safest path to the lantern room. Attitude: fearful and aggressive Encounter start: mutual awareness at close range Response trigger: It attacks if cornered or if anyone crosses directly beneath it; it calms if fed or guided to safety. Aftermath: Its disturbed roost and the scuffed beams point the party to the lantern room above. Room guidance: An Ape clings to the upper beams because the storm gusts drove it into the tower and it is now trapped, frightened, and aggressive toward anything that comes close. It blocks the safest crossing to the lantern room, but it is not here by choice. The encounter begins with mutual awareness at close range as the party enters the beam space and the Ape spots them immediately. It may lunge if approached, but it can also be calmed, distracted with food, or guided away from the broken shutters. The main challenge is the unstable route: loose boards, swinging chains, and wind gusts can throw characters off balance. The party can fight, talk, or carefully cross while keeping to the strongest beams. After the scene, the floorboards near the far wall reveal claw marks and a dropped scrap of cloth from above, showing the final climb continues upward.

Event 4

The Lantern’s Hidden Mark

Read Aloud

The lantern room glows with pale, trapped light. A glass prism hangs in the center of the chamber, and moonlit dust shimmers across the floor around a marked stone arch set into the wall.

Details

Attached monsters (use these exact stat blocks): - Quantity: 1; Monster: Satyr. Why here: It is tied to Veyra Thist’s hiding place and is guarding the lantern room’s secret mark to the Silver Grove. Activity: Lounge near the prism, toy with the marked stone arch, and tease intruders about the hidden path. Attitude: open to interaction but evasive Encounter start: alert monster at a distance Response trigger: It bargains if spoken to respectfully, but resists if the party tries to seize the prism. Aftermath: The marked arch and the prism stand reveal where the final confrontation leads. Room guidance: A Satyr is here because it has claimed this room as part of Veyra Thist’s hiding place and is guarding the stolen moonbeam’s presentation, not the tower itself. It is open to interaction, amused by the party’s arrival, and may bargain, boast, or warn them away depending on how they speak to it. The Satyr knows about the marked stone arch and the route back into the Silver Grove, but it will not hand over that knowledge freely. The moonbeam trapped in the prism is visible and clearly the source of the tower’s dimness. The party can inspect the prism, question the Satyr, or examine the marked arch. A successful Spot check reveals a hidden latch beneath the prism stand that loosens the glass housing, making the moonbeam easier to recover. After the scene, the marked stone arch is the clear clue that connects this tower to the hidden place in the Silver Grove.

Event 5

Veyra in the Moonbeam

Read Aloud

Silver light suddenly gathers in the lantern room, and Veyra Thist steps out of the glow with a thief’s grin and a blade held low. The Riding Horse stamp of the tower’s old stable echoes below as the room fills with bright, trembling radiance.

Details

Attached monsters (use these exact stat blocks): - Quantity: 1; Monster: Riding Horse. Why here: Veyra Thist has used the tower’s stable access and moonlit beamwork to defend her nest near the lantern room. Activity: Lunge through the glow, block the prism, and protect the stolen moonbeam. Attitude: immediately hostile Encounter start: mutual awareness at close range Response trigger: It attacks when the party reaches for the prism or corners Veyra Thist; it can be driven off, defeated, or bargained with if the moonbeam is restored. Aftermath: When it is driven off or defeated, the moonbeam returns and the tower’s light reveals the route to the hidden arch. Room guidance: Veyra Thist emerges from the lantern’s glow to defend her nest and the stolen moonbeam. She is immediately hostile, but she is also a fey rival who may bargain if the party offers a clean exit or proves they can restore the tower without ruining her hiding place. The encounter begins with mutual awareness at close range as she reveals herself beside the prism. The party can fight her, try to negotiate, or use the marked arch and the prism stand to force her into a corner. If defeated, driven off, or persuaded to surrender, the moonbeam returns to the lantern and the tower’s light shines again. That restored light reveals the hidden arch’s true alignment and resolves the immediate dungeon situation. After the encounter, the room contains Veyra’s dropped token and the fully restored lantern glow, which points the way to the Silver Grove lead.

Conclusion

With Veyra Thist driven off or forced to yield, the stolen moonbeam settles back into the lantern and the tower’s light returns in full. The watchtower no longer feels tense and half-blind; the stairs, rafters, and lantern room all seem ordinary again, as if the place can finally breathe. Warden Elira Moss thanks the party, and the rescued messenger settles at last, safe and calm. If the heroes need it, this is a good moment for a short rest, a warm meal, and a chance to sort through their spoils. Elira can help them identify useful finds, and the party may return to Willowgate to trade, sell loot, or simply recover before moving on. Congratulations, you are now Level 2! The tower’s immediate danger is over, the moonbeam is restored, and the party has clearly won the day. The watchtower stands secure again, and the heroes can leave knowing they have brought the situation to a clean and satisfying close.
